Context Modelng in Smart Environments: A Perspective from Pervasive Computing

Summary of His Talk

We live in an increasingly connected and automated society.

Smart environments embody this trend by linking computers and other devices to everyday settings and commonplace tasks. The desire to create smart environments has existed for decades, however, recent advances in smart devices, wireless and sensor networks, mobile and pervasive computing, machine learning, middleware and agent technologies have made this dream a reality. We define a `smart environment' as one that is able to autonomously acquire and apply knowledge about an environment, and adapt to its inhabitants to improve their experience.

In this talk, we will propose a learning and prediction based paradigm for designing and modeling smart home environments. The foundation of this paradigm lies in information theory in that it manages uncertainty due to the inhabitants' context (location, activity, etc.) in daily lives. The basic idea is to build compressed dictionary of context profiles collected from sensors and other monitoring devices, efficiently learn from those profiles, and optimally track and predict the inhabitant's contexts. Successful predictions help automate tasks and adaptive control of device operations as well as lead to context-aware resource management schemes. We will also show how game theory plays an important role in resolving conflicts among multiple inhabitants' preferences. Finally, we will present an overview and demo of our MavHome smart home project at UT Arlington

About Dr. Sajal K. Das

Dr. Sajal K. Das is a Distinguished Scholar Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and the Founding Director of the Center forResearch in Wireless Mobility and Networking (CReWMaN) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).

An internationally-known computer scientist, he has visited numerous universities, research organizations, government and industry labs worldwide for collaborative research and invited talks. He is frequently invited as a keynote speaker at international conferences and symposia.

Dr. Das' current research interests include wireless sensor networks, designing and modeling of smart environments, resource and mobility management in wireless networks, mobile and pervasive computing, wireless multimedia and QoS provisioning, mobile internet architectures and protocols, grid computing, biological networking, applied graph theory and game theory. He coauthored the book "Smart Environments: Technology, Protocols, and Applications" (John Wiley, 2005). He has published over 400 research papers in international conferences and journals, and holds five US patents. He received 5 Best Paper Awards in IEEE PerCom'06, ACM MobiCom'99, ICOIN'02, ACM MSwiM'00 and ACM/IEEE PADS'97. He is also a recipient of UTA's Outstanding Faculty Research Award in Computer Science (2001 and 2003), College of Engineering Research Excellence Award (2003), University Award for Distinguished Record of Research (2005), and UTA Academy of Distinguished Scholars Award (2006). Dr. Das serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Pervasive and Mobile Computing journal, and Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, ACM/Springer Wireless Networks, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He has served as General or Technical Program Chair and TPC member of numerous IEEE and ACM conferences. He is a member of IEEE TCCC and TCPP Executive Committees and serves on the advisory boards of several cutting-edge companies.
